Do I need a visa for Kyrgyzstan?

Citizens of the Czech Republic, the other EU countries and the UK do not. Since the start of 2026, however, a visa-free stay is limited to 30 days in total within each 60-day period counted from the day you enter. The change came with Kyrgyz government resolution No. 855 of 31 December 2025; before that, the limit was 60 days.

Older blog posts still say 60 days. Days add up within the 60-day window, so a quick hop across the border and back does not reset the count. Our programmes last 9 to 13 days and fit well within the limit.

To stay longer than 30 days, you need the appropriate visa before your visa-free period runs out.

If your nationality needs a visa, you can apply online through the official e-VISA portal of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A tourist e-visa is issued for up to 30 days, the application is reviewed within 5 working days once all information is complete, and the fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.

How long must my passport be valid?

The Czech foreign ministry asks for at least six months of passport validity beyond the planned end of your stay, while the UK government counts six months from arrival. Plan for the stricter rule and renew in good time.

Carry your passport, or a notarised copy, at all times: the UK government warns that police can detain people without ID.

• Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of your stay.
• A photo of your passport data page, saved on your phone and in your email.
• Your travel insurance certificate with the assistance phone number.
• A doctor's prescription for any medication you take regularly.
• For the Kel-Suu programme, a passport scan sent to us for the border-zone permit.

Do I need to register after arrival?

Not on a visa-free stay. The Czech foreign ministry states that Czech citizens entering visa-free do not need to register in Kyrgyzstan. Registration with the State Registration Service applies to holders of certain types of visa.

Do count your days. Overstaying can lead to a fine and possibly deportation, and under a rule approved by the Kyrgyz government on 7 September 2026, foreigners who overstay will be refused visa-free entry next time they arrive.

What are the customs and cash rules?

You can bring in or take out cash in any currency without a customs declaration as long as the total does not exceed the equivalent of USD 10,000. Larger sums must be declared.

• Alcohol: up to 3 litres per adult (18+) duty-free; between 3 and 5 litres you pay EUR 10 duty for each extra litre.
• Tobacco: 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco duty-free; importing more is prohibited.
• Prescription medicines: carry the prescription and list the medicines on your customs declaration.

Do not take photos or fly a drone near border checkpoints, military sites or police stations. The UK government notes that this is illegal in Kyrgyzstan.

Can I cross overland from Almaty?

Some travellers fly into Almaty and continue to Bishkek by road, via the Korday crossing on the Kazakh side and Ak-Zhol on the Kyrgyz side. You pass passport control on both sides.

Kazakhstan has its own entry rules; Czech citizens, for example, can stay there up to 30 days visa-free. Both countries belong to the Eurasian Economic Union, so the cash declaration applies when you enter from outside the union, not between member states.

When do I need a border-zone permit?

Some remote mountain areas near the borders, especially near China, lie within a border zone. There you also need a special permit, known locally as a propusk, which border guards check along the way. It must be arranged in advance.

Lake Kel-Suu (3,500 m) in the Naryn region, which we visit on our longest programme, is one of these places. We arrange the permit for you from a scan of your passport. Send the passport you will actually travel with, and tell us if you get a new one.

What travel insurance should I get?

Travel insurance is not included in our prices and we do not recommend travelling without it. According to the Czech foreign ministry, only first aid is free in Kyrgyzstan and further treatment has to be paid for, which can be expensive. Your policy should cover:

• medical expenses abroad,
• hiking at altitudes up to 4,000 m, as the highest point of our programmes is the Ala-Kul pass at almost 3,920 m,
• horse riding, which is part of all three programmes,
• trip cancellation, in case you cannot travel.

• The official e-VISA portal of the Kyrgyz Republic (evisa.e-gov.kg) if your nationality needs a visa.
